About English Proficiency Tests

When applying to universities abroad, you usually need to prove your English language proficiency. The four most commonly accepted tests are:

  • IELTS Academic: A widely accepted test graded on a 9-band scale.
  • TOEFL iBT: A popular choice for US universities, historically graded out of 120. (Note: As of Jan 2026, TOEFL is transitioning to a 1-6 scale).
  • PTE Academic: A computer-based test by Pearson, graded from 10 to 90.
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): A convenient online test graded from 10 to 160.

Different universities prefer different tests, and understanding how your score compares across these tests can help you broaden your application choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this converter?

The converter uses the latest official concordance tables published by the test makers (ETS, IDP, Pearson, and Duolingo). However, these are approximate conversions for guidance only. Every university sets its own score requirements, so you should always check directly with your target institution.

What is the CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It ranges from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). Most universities require a B2 or C1 level.

Why is the PTE conversion different now?

In recent years, the IELTS partners updated the concordance with PTE Academic. Our tool reflects the updated official alignment (e.g., an IELTS 6.5 now maps to a PTE 59).
