How is the IELTS Overall Band Calculated?
Official equal-weight arithmetic averaging and rounding rules
Your Overall Band Score is the arithmetic average of your four component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. All four components are weighted equally at 25% each.
Official IELTS Rounding Algorithm:
- If the average fractional score ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band (e.g.
6.25 → 6.5). - If the average fractional score ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band (e.g.
6.75 → 7.0). - If the average ends below .25 (e.g. .125), it rounds down to the nearest whole band (e.g.
6.125 → 6.0). - If the average ends between .25 and .75 (e.g. .375 or .625), it rounds to the nearest half band (e.g.
6.375 → 6.5and6.625 → 6.5).

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Your Overall Band score is the arithmetic average of your four component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band according to official IELTS rounding conventions.
Does IELTS round band scores up or down?
IELTS rounds averages ending in .25 up to the next half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5). Averages ending in .75 round up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0). Averages ending in .125 round down to the whole band (e.g., 6.125 becomes 6.0), while .875 rounds up (e.g., 6.875 becomes 7.0).
What is a competitive IELTS score for studying abroad?
For undergraduate programs, an Overall Band of 6.0 to 6.5 is standard. For postgraduate degrees at reputable universities, a 6.5 or 7.0 is usually required, frequently with minimum sub-score stipulations (such as no band below 6.0 in Writing or Speaking).
Can one low component score drag down my overall band?
Yes. Because the overall band is an unweighted average of the four modules, a significantly lower score in one module (e.g., a 5.0 in Writing) directly reduces your overall average. Additionally, many universities enforce individual module minimums regardless of your overall band.
Are Academic and General Training scored using the same overall band formula?
Yes. While the raw score conversion for Reading differs between Academic and General Training, the final overall band calculation and rounding formula from the 4 component bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is identical.
