How is the IELTS Overall Band Calculated?
Your Overall Band Score is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The component scores are weighted equally.
Official Rounding Rules:
- If your average ends in .25, your overall band is rounded up to the next half band. (e.g., 6.25 → 6.5)
- If your average ends in .75, your overall band is rounded up to the next whole band. (e.g., 6.75 → 7.0)
- If your average ends in .125 or .875, it rounds to the nearest half or whole band. (e.g., 6.125 → 6.0, 6.875 → 7.0)
Examples:
- Example 1: L: 6.5, R: 6.5, W: 5.0, S: 7.0 → Average: 6.25 → 6.5
- Example 2: L: 4.0, R: 3.5, W: 4.0, S: 4.0 → Average: 3.875 → 4.0
- Example 3: L: 6.5, R: 6.5, W: 6.0, S: 6.0 → Average: 6.25 → 6.5

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good IELTS score for study abroad?▼
A "good" score depends entirely on your destination and degree level. Generally, undergraduate degrees require an Overall Band of 6.0 to 6.5. Postgraduate programs at top-tier universities often require a 6.5 or 7.0, sometimes specifying minimum sub-scores (like "no band lower than 6.0").
Can one low skill drag down my overall band?▼
Yes. Because the overall band is a simple average of the four sections, bombing one section (like a 4.5 in Writing) can drag an otherwise perfect score down dramatically. Many universities combat this by requiring both a minimum Overall Band and minimums in each section.
