IELTS Writing Task 1 Frequently Asked Questions

7 Practice FAQs
What is the official minimum word count for IELTS Task 1?

The official minimum requirement is 150 words. Writing fewer than 150 words leads to a penalty under Task Achievement. We recommend aiming for a concise 165 to 190 words.

How much time should I spend on Task 1 during the exam?

You should spend approximately 20 minutes on Task 1. Because Task 2 contributes twice as much to your IELTS Writing score and requires 250 words, spending more than 20 minutes on Task 1 risks losing valuable time for Task 2.

What is the most crucial structural element in an Academic Task 1 report?

The Overview statement. Without a clear overview summarizing the main trends, stages, or major differences, Task Achievement is severely limited regardless of vocabulary or grammatical accuracy.

Should I express my personal opinion in Academic Task 1?

No. Academic Task 1 is strictly a factual report. Never include personal opinions, explanations of causes not shown in the visual, or subjective recommendations.

What are the three required bullet points in General Training Task 1?

Every GT Task 1 prompt provides three explicit situational requirements. You must develop all three points adequately and in connected paragraphs to achieve a high score in Task Achievement.

How should I choose the salutation and closing for a GT letter?

For formal letters (unknown recipient), begin with "Dear Sir or Madam," and conclude with "Yours faithfully,". For semi-formal letters (named person e.g. manager), use "Dear Mr./Ms. [Surname]," and "Yours sincerely,". For personal letters, use "Dear [Name]," and "Best wishes,".

Are contractions permitted in IELTS Task 1?

Contractions ("don't", "it's") are natural in General Training personal letters to friends. In formal/semi-formal letters and Academic reports, full forms should be used to maintain an appropriate register.

Official IELTS Writing Task 1 Format & Weighting

Official test specifications from the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge English

Academic Task 1: Report on Visual Data

Candidates are presented with a visual stimulus (line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, process diagram, or map) and must write a factual description in at least 150 words in approximately 20 minutes. Personal opinions or speculative external explanations are strictly prohibited.

  • Paragraph 1: Paraphrased introduction (defining visual, measure, and timeframe)
  • Paragraph 2: Clear, comprehensive Overview statement summarizing principal features
  • Paragraphs 3 & 4: Specific body paragraphs with accurate data comparisons
General Training Task 1: Letter Writing

Candidates are given an everyday situation and must write a letter in at least 150 words responding to three specific bullet points. The register may be personal, semi-formal, or formal depending on the recipient.

  • Appropriate salutation matching recipient formality (e.g. Dear Sir or Madam)
  • Clear statement of purpose in the opening paragraph
  • Equal and thorough coverage of all 3 prompt bullet points in connected prose
  • Correct closing sign-off (e.g. Yours faithfully vs Best wishes)
Official Score Weighting Principle:

Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the IELTS Writing score. Because of this weighting, spending more than 20 minutes on Task 1 risks losing marks on your Task 2 essay.

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Task 1

How much does Task 1 contribute to my overall IELTS Writing score?

Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the IELTS Writing score. Both tasks are evaluated across four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.

What happens if I write 140 words in Task 1 instead of 150?

Writing under 150 words automatically reduces your Task Achievement score. A response under 140 words is generally capped at Band 5 in Task Achievement, regardless of vocabulary fluency. Aim for 165–185 words to stay safely above the limit.
