Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Writing

Which task should I write first during the 60-minute exam?

Most instructors recommend completing Task 1 in the first 20 minutes and Task 2 in the remaining 40 minutes. However, because Task 2 accounts for twice as many marks, some candidates prefer tackling Task 2 first while fresh. Never spend more than 20 minutes on Task 1.

Are Task 1 and Task 2 marked separately?

Yes. Certified examiners grade each task independently across four sub-scores (TR/TA, CC, LR, GRA). The final writing band score is calculated using the weighted formula: (Task 1 × 1 + Task 2 × 2) / 3, rounded to the nearest half-band.

Do these checkers give an official IELTS band score?

No automated tool can provide an official IELTS band score. Real examiners assess essays based on nuanced semantic meaning, cohesive flow, and context. Our tools provide deterministic structural feedback, word counts, and language pattern signals to help you polish your drafts.
